Make up a standard little hat. For the bonnet: Cast on 46 stitches – leave about a foot of yarn. Garter-stitch 2 rows. Next row: K2tog to end. Beginning with a purl row, stocking-stitch 5 rows. Next row: K1, K2tog to end. Purl 1 row. Next row: K2tog to end. B&T tightly. |
Making Up: Oversew row ends together and turn right side out. Work short running stiches around the first row of stocking-stitch. Pull up gathers to fit top of the hat. Fasten off and sew hat onto body. Decorate as wished. An alternative: Some of the hats are knitted in “mistaken rib” stitch: Cast on 27 stiches and knit two rows. Next 12 rows: *K2, P2*, *repeat to end, K1. (I usually cheat and knit rows 11 and 12 – which will be covered up by the bonnet). Finish in the usual way. |
