Easter Chicks

These little chicks are a quick, fun project, and with each one raising either £1 or £2 for the Hospice, they are a really worthwhile use of both time and that ever-growing wool stash!

As I hate sewing on eyes, and I’m not keen on gluing them, I knit them in, which means they are super secure.

To knit your eyes in, you need to adapt the pattern for the head just slightly:
1. Cast on 20 sts
2. Knit 1 row
3. Inc in 1st st, knit 8, inc in nest 2 sts, knit to end (23 sts)
4. Inc in 1st st, knit 9, inc in nest 2 sts, knit to end (26 sts)
5. Inc in 1st st, knit 11, inc in nest 2 sts, knit to end (29 sts)

6. Inc 1 st at the beg of every row until 41 sts are on the needle
7. Inc 1 st at each end of the next row (43 sts)
8. Cast off 11 sts at the beg of next 2 rows (21 sts)
9. Inc 1 st at the beg of next 4 rows (25 sts)
10. Knit 4 rows
11. Knit 2, K2 tog 5 times, Knit 1, K2 tog 5 times, Knit 2 (15 sts)
12. Measure 2 arm lengths of wool and cut your working yarn.  Thread on 2 beads for the eyes.
13. Knit 6, move bead eye up, Knit 3, move bead eye up, Knit 6  You will now have the two eyes in position
14. Knit 3 more rows
15. Knit 2, K2 tog 3 times, Knit 1, K2 tog 2 times, Knit 2 (10 sts)
16. Draw wool through remaining 10 sts and pull up tight.
