Sailboat Hat

Instructions:
Hull: Cast on 13 sts in blue
Rows 1 & 2 – knit
Row 3 – knit, inc one st at each end (15 sts)
Row 4 – knit
Row 5 – knit, inc one st at each end (17 sts)
Row 6 – 8 – knit

Sails & Mast: Change to white and brown & work in Stocking Stitch
Row 1 – K8 in white (carry the hull colour behind the first 7 sts, ready to start working the letter on Row 2) K1 brown, K8 white

The picture above shows where on the sail the letter is worked.

The pattern below describes how to work the mast and sails, you need to start working the letter as you purl back on row 2.  
See the image below for the letter sections – just imagine this in the white box of the sail (see above-right).

Row 2 – purl 8 white, 1 brown, 8 white
Continue central brown mast stitch throughout.
Row 3 – knit
Row 4 and every alternate row – purl
Row 5 – k2 tog at each end (15 sts)
Row 7 – k2tog at each end (13 sts)
Row 9 – k2tog at each end (11sts)
Row 11 – k2tog at at each end (9 sts)
Row 13 – k2tog at each end (7 sts)
Row 15 – k2tog at each end (5 sts)
Row 17 – k2tog at each end (3sts)
Row 19 – k2tog in brown k1 in white (2sts)
Row 20 – purl
Row 21 – sl1, k1 both in brown psso.
B&T

For the back of the boat use the same pattern but omit the mast and the letter.

Making Up:
Sew up the side seams, turn right side out and stitch on a little felt flag in a matching colour.
